Bristol-based nonprofit DK Movement Cares is building momentum for its 2nd annual 5K Run/ Fitness Walk to be held in Bristol on Saturday, August 24, 2024, with funds raised being devoted to the Bristol Special Olympics. The event will be held on a course starting at the Bridge Community Church in Bristol, with registration and check-in 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM, and the race start at 9:00 AM. There will also be a free Kids Fun Run (children 9 and under) prior to the 5K.

The nonprofit DK Movement Cares was formed a year ago by Kelly Houston and Derek Jones, co-founders of the popular luxury streetwear brand DK Movement, based in Bristol. The inaugural race last summer raised $11,000, which was split between two local nonprofit organizations.

In the months since, DK Movement Cares has participated in numerous fundraising events, including a holiday food drive that contributed 450 pounds of food and $1,000 that was split between two local shelters, and the donation of a Little Library to the St. Vincent De Paul Shelter of Bristol, in collaboration with the Making Bristol Better organization.

Derek Jones and Kelly Houston have also met with middle school-age youth at a Career Day and provided additional support to the local Boys & Girls Club, and contributed funds to further the work of The Agape House homeless shelter.

    Promoting Enduring Community Connections

DK Movement Cares believes deeply in the infinite potential residing within every individual. Derek and Kelly’s fervent commitment to this noble cause is not just about providing assistance; it's about engaging with communities, listening to their needs, and addressing their unique challenges.

Recognizing the distinct obstacles faced by both adults and youth, they tailor initiatives to meet specific needs, always aiming to foster growth, resilience, and self-awareness; acting as a beacon of hope, guiding those eager to embark on a transformative journey of self-improvement.

The mission transcends merely offering a helping hand; it's about igniting the inherent potential in every person, encouraging them to recognize and embrace their worth, capabilities, and dreams. By speaking with people and truly hearing their needs, DK Movement Cares envisions communities where everyone is inspired and empowered to become the best version of themselves.

“We are dedicated to making a positive impact in people’s lives by providing support for services that promote health, wellness, and independence,” Kelly and Derek noted. “We aim to raise awareness and funds for other non-profit organizations that share our vision of creating a better world for those in need. Our ultimate goal is to empower individuals and communities to lead fulfilling lives and reach their full potential, regardless of their circumstances.”

Registration Now Underway, Sponsor Support Expanding

Registration for the 5K has begun, and an impressive line-up of sponsors supporting the race is taking shape. The first 200 participants will receive a complimentary t-shirt and swag bag. Top finishers in the 5K Run will receive cash prizes; discounted rates are available for teams that sign-up to participate, and there will be school vs. school, team vs. team and gym vs. gym friendly competitions. There will also be age-group medals and a challenging hill competition among those who secure a top 15 finish to compete for the King and Queen of the Hill title. There will also be a dedicated Kids' Zone area, musical entertainment to enhance the race atmosphere, and a range of food trucks offering a culinary treat for participants and spectators.

Businesses and organizations signing on as sponsors include Barnes Group, Central CT Chamber of Commerce, Michael Chambers Jr. Attorney at Law, and Thomaston Savings Bank. DK Movement Cares also received a Community Grant from Walmart. Kid Zone sponsors are HRA of New Britain and Bridge Community Church. Bank of America will be among the organizations providing volunteers to staff the event. Media sponsors are WFSB Channel 3 and AMP Radio Network. Additional sponsorship packages are available; go to www.dkmovementcares.org for more information.

DK Movement Cares is a 501(c)(3) non-profit; the mission is to provide compassionate care and support to individuals, children, families, and those with special needs. On-site vendors on August 24 will include Bristol Boys and Girls Club and United Way of West Central CT.

On Course, On-Site on August 24

The course on Saturday, August 24 will be mostly flat, including Riverside Avenue and North Main Street in Downtown Bristol. Runners will make their way towards the center of Bristol, where they’ll be met with a hill which quickly turns into a downhill finish through the heart of Bristol and ending at the Bridge Community Church.

Founders Derek Jones and Kelly Houston share a passion to help others, which led to the founding of DK Movement and quickly thereafter, DK Movement Cares. It has been driven by the shared determination to inspire others to never give up on their dreams, and to focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle through good choices and positive mindset. Their efforts have been recognized by the Better Business Bureau Serving Connecticut and Derek Jones recently earned a place in the Marquis Who’s Who publication.

Derek and Kelly understand the challenges that families and children face in accessing essential services such as healthcare, education, food, and housing. They also recognize the importance of mental health and emotional support for individuals and families going through difficult times. They believe that every family and child deserve to live in a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment, and that no one should be left behind or left out due to circumstances beyond their control.

DK Movement’s goal is to reach as many people as possible to inspire them to grow as individuals while uplifting others within their communities. They welcome collaborations with local community organizations in Connecticut and beyond, building on their work in Bristol.
