With the 2024 Paris Olympics set to begin on Friday, Connecticut will be well represented on the world stage. More than two dozen athletes with ties to the state will compete in various disciplines, including one local athlete aiming for gold in the unique sport of modern pentathlon. Jess Savner, a 32-year-old from Bethlehem, is the top-ranked U.S. woman in modern pentathlon. The sport combines five disciplines into four events:
    • Running: A 3,200-meter cross-country race.
    • Shooting: Laser pistol shooting.
    • Swimming: A 200-meter freestyle swim.
    • Show Jumping: An equestrian obstacle course.
    • Fencing: A bout of épée fencing.
Savner's impressive skillset and top ranking make her a strong contender for a medal in Paris. Another Connecticut athlete with Olympic experience is Liam Corrigan, a 26-year-old rower originally from Old Lyme. Corrigan is no stranger to the Games, having competed and won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He also participated in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Greenwich will be represented in women's field hockey by 21-year-old Beth Yeager. The former Sacred Heart student and current Princeton field hockey star was named to the U.S. Women's National Team in June 2023. Yeager lives by the game-day mantra "Just Play." "
