Strayhorn: Formerly enslaved formed new communities
As Union troops began overrunning coastal North Carolina in the fall of 1861, the formerly enslaved people they were helping to free began seeking refuge in a variety of new communities. Their individual journeys to freedom would leave a legacy that’s still felt today, according to Dr. Joshua Strayhorn, a research fellow with the U.S. National Park Service. NCHSAA participation rises in almost every sport, surpasses 200,000 total student-athletes
For the first time since the 2017-2018 school year, the N.C. High School Athletic Association saw more than 200,000 student-athletes compete in sports last school year. The NCHSAA released its participation data from the 2023-2024 school year on Monday morning, and it shows a significant amount of growth overall and in most sports year-over-year.

Missing Gaston County woman found alive
A missing Gaston County woman was found alive beside the South Fork River with no memory of what happened to her, according to her family. Kelly Krueger, 38, had been missing since at least July 12 when she was found at 10:30 a.m. Saturday by a man who was collecting his dogs, said Krueger's niece, Jessica Mathews, in a text message. She was last seen leaving the home she shared with her father in Stanley without her phone, keys or wallet. She was reported missing several days after she left.

AMOREM names new Chief Executive Officer
LENOIR — On July 15, the AMOREM Board of Directors named April Moore as the organization’s new chief executive officer. Moore began her career in hospice in 2004 as a volunteer coordinator with Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, which integrated with Burke Hospice and Palliative Care in 2021 to form AMOREM.
