Riot Fest has confirmed the passing of a 58-year-old man who suffered a medical emergency while attending the Chicago festival on Sunday, September 22nd.

According to the Chicago Sun Times , the man, identified as Stephen Shult, of Arlington Heights, IL, sustained a head injury after being separated from his daughter and other friends before Slayer’s Sunday night headlining set. Shult’s family believes he may have suffered the injury in Slayer’s mosh put, but organizers for Riot Fest believe the injury was sustained prior to the band’s performance.

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly challenging time. The health, safety, and well-being of our fans and community have always been our top priority. We are aware of the various speculations surrounding this tragedy, including claims that it may be linked to the Slayer crowd. However, we want to clarify that this is not the case. The on-site medical team responded to this medical incident, near the Ferris Wheel area, prior to Slayer’s performance,” Riot Fest organizers said in a statement. “Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we will not be sharing further details.”

Shult was taken to an area hospital with head trauma, unfortunately under the wrong name. By the time his family located him, he had undergone a craniotomy due to brain swelling and bleeding. On Thursday, October 3rd, Shult sadly passed away.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by Shult’s daughter, Jen Eaton, to cover the cost of his medical bills and pay for celebration of life services. You can donate here .
