Fatman Scoop, the rapper and hype man known for his appearances on tracks like Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control” and Mariah Carey’s “I Like That,” has died at the age of 53 after suffering a medical emergency on stage during a concert in Connecticut on Friday.

News of Fatman Scoop’s death was confirmed by his tour manager, who wrote on Instagram : “I am honestly lost for words… You took me all over the world and had me performing alongside you on some of the biggest and greatest stages on this planet, the things you taught me have truely made me the man I am today. Thank you so much, I love you.”

Fatman Scoop’s work on Missy Elliott’s “Lose Control” earned him a Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video and a nomination for Best Rap Song.

Over the years, he also collaborated with the likes of Timbaland (“Drop”), Skrillex (“Recess”), and Ciara (“Level Up”). His most successful solo hit, “Be Faithful,” was released in 1999 and cracked the top 25 on the Billboard Rap Songs chart.

Fatman Scoop will reportedly feature on A$AP Rocky’s upcoming album, Don’t Be Dumb , on a song called “Hood Happy.”
