Nat’l Park Service Marks 80th Anniv of Port Chicago Explosion That Killed 202 Black Sailors
The National Park Service (NPS) is set to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Port Chicago explosion, a tragic event that claimed the lives of 202 Black sailors. The incident occurred on July 17, 1944, in Contra Costa County, when 4,606 tons of ammunition being loaded unto two U.S. Navy cargo ships detonated, instantly killing 320 men on site and injuring another 390 workers.
Multi-vehicle crash on Highway 680 near Concord kills 1
At least one died in a multiple-vehicle collision Sunday night on Interstate Highway 680 in Contra Costa County, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP said that around 10:55 p.m., its officers learned that a crash happened on southbound I-680 just north of the Concord Avenue offramp in the census-designated place of Pacheco. Five vehicles reportedly figured in the collision, including a Volkswagen car, a Toyota Prius, a Toyota Corolla, a Chevrolet Tahoe, and a Honda Civic. The CHP said one of the vehicles overturned, while the Civic was facing the wrong direction when officers arrived in the area. Due to the crash, lanes of southbound I-680 in the area were closed. The CHP said a center divider wall was damaged due to the collision.

Major Antioch cocaine dealer, 70, sentenced to 30 months in federal prison
OAKLAND — An Antioch drug dealer who moved cocaine by the kilogram has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in federal prison, court records show. Lorenzo Lee, 70, is set to report to the Bureau of Prisons on Sept. 3 to begin serving his sentence. He pleaded guilty to a drug distribution charge and was sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg, records show.

Homeless man arrested after woman's remains found in fire along California creek
SAN PABLO, Calif. (TCN) -- A 35-year-old man who police describe as transient is in custody on suspicion of killing a woman whose body was found in a fire along a creek. According to the San Pablo Police Department, on Tuesday, July 2, Contra Costa Fire personnel extinguished the flames along the San Pablo Creek and found a deceased individual with severe burns.
