Campaign raises $6.5 million to acquire two properties and add to vital Wildlife and Trail Corridor in Contra Costa County. John Muir Land Trust (JMLT, jmlt.org) announces the successful completion of fundraising for the Campaign to Expand Franklin Ridge. Receiving donations from thousands of supporters across the region, JMLT raised the $6.5 million needed to acquire and permanently protect 100-acre Kenneth Gerlack Preserve and 134-acre Barnett Ranch. These pristine acres will be added to the Franklin Ridge Wildlife and Trail Corridor, a beautiful natural landscape southwest of downtown Martinez that is a vital refuge for native wildlife and a treasured recreational haven for outdoor enthusiasts. In an era of global climate change, the preservation of intact natural corridors is more crucial than ever, and this campaign protects one of the most important in the East Bay.

A nanny from Antioch was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison Thursday for sexually abusing a child in her care. Michelle Nicole Hidalgo, 29, pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual acts with a child 10 years old or younger.Hidalgo has been in jail since her arrest on Sept. 22. San Pablo: Man arrested on suspicion of killing woman, setting body on fire
SAN PABLO – Authorities on Thursday arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of killing a woman and setting her body on fire earlier this month along San Pablo Creek. Contra Costa County firefighters found the body around 1:25 a.m. on July 2 while responding to a report of a fire near the 1900 block of Road 20, according to the San Pablo Police Department.

Man convicted of rapes in San Jose and San Ramon
MARTINEZ — Two years after he was charged, a Mountain House man has been convicted of raping women in Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties, court records show. Qais Faizi, 35, was convicted this week of raping a woman at a party in San Ramon in 2021. Last October, he was convicted in connection with the 2017 gang rape of a woman in San Jose and sentenced to nine years in prison, court records show.
