CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA (August 13, 2024) — Thanks to the generosity of over 700 donors, California Shakespeare Theater can open its 50th anniversary production this September. The company already had the sets and costumes designed and the show cast when a funding shortfall of $350,000 put their production of Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” in jeopardy.

City of Lafayette explains use of property taxes
Have you ever wondered where the revenue from property taxes goes?. As seen in the above graphic, the largest share (57%) goes to school districts, including the community college; 14.1% goes to the Contra Costa Fire District; 11.1% to the County; 3.9% to utilities (EBMUD & CentralSan); 3.4% to parks (including the East Bay Regional Park District); and 3.9% going to various other public agencies (including BART). The City of Lafayette receives only 6.67%. Thus, for a single-family house assessed at $1M, while the property owner will pay $10,000 annually for the Countywide tax; the City receives only $670.
West Nile Virus Confirmed In Contra Costa County
Two groups of mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile virus in Oakley, the Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District said. In addition to the mosquitoes, four dead birds have tested positive for the virus and antibodies were detected in five sentinel chickens, the agency said in a press release.

Concord home damaged in Friday morning fire
There were no reports of injuries in a Concord house fire late Friday morning, but the incident drew a significant response from Contra Costa crews. A large plume of smoke was produced by the fire on the 1300 block of San Jose Avenue. Contra Costa Fire officials confirmed it was reported at around 11:15 a.m. Friday morning.
