A new bar where patrons can serve their own beer from a wall full of options has opened in downtown Conway.

Palmetto Taps , 909 4th Ave., opened on July 24. It is a self-serve taproom, meaning customers are able to grab a cup and choose which beer and decide how much they want.

“You could pour an ounce or you could pour a whole glass,” said owner Brian Von.

The self-serve portion has 40 taps with various craft beers, hard ciders and seltzers. Von said there’s also six taps behind the bar with big brands like PBR, along with cans, bottles and wine. He’ll be switching out kegs as they run out, so there will be new drink options often.

To use the self serve taps, customers check in at the bar and get a card or a wrist band, which they tap at whichever drink they’d like. They are then able to pour the drink. Prices range from 40 cents to 60 cents an ounce, which comes out to around $6 to $10 a pint, according to Von.

Palmetto Taps is the first self-serve taproom to open in Horry County. The nearest one is the Pawley’s Tap House and Grill in Pawleys Island.

Von moved to Conway from California around two years ago to be closer to his son, a Coastal Carolina University alum. He said he wanted to open a new kind of business and decided on a self-serve bar.

After the grand opening, Von hopes to offer food and entertainment along with drinks. There is no set date, but the grand opening should happen in August.

Palmetto Taps is open from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Monday, 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and noon to 8 p.m on Sunday.

“I’m trying to create a nice place to hang out,” Von said. “A place where you can meet up with friends or make new ones.”
