COOK COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A truck driver on I-294 has died after his semi crashed into a guardrail and burst into flames.

According to Illinois State Police, the accident occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. on the northbound I-294 exit ramp at Lake Cook Road. A FedEx double tractor-trailer veered off the road for unknown reasons and hit the guardrail.

The driver of the truck was ejected from the vehicle and the cab caught fire, Illinois State Police said. The driver was transported in serious condition to an area hospital but eventually died.

Illinois State Police remain on the scene investigating the crash. In addition fire crews are still tending to the smoldering trailers.

As a result, the Lake Cook exit remains blocked. WBBM traffic reporter Beau Duran suggests Deerfield Road exit as an alternate.
