Ice Cream In A Can (or Bag)

    2024-08-22

This is such a fun recipe for kids and adults alike! No ice cream maker? No problem!! This is such a fun activity for everyone to have fresh, customized, homemade soft serve ice cream in about 15 minutes! Here's what you'll need for 2-4 servings:

    Ingredients:

    • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
    • 1/2 cup half and half, or whole milk
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 6-8 cups ice
    • 1/3 cup rock salt

    Optional Add-ins:

    • Oreo pieces
    • Diced Fruit
    • Chopped nuts
    • Coconut
    • mini marshmallows
    • mini gummy bears
    • mini chocolate chips
    • Brownie pieces

In a zip-top bag, combine the half & half, sugar, and vanilla. Seal the bag and gently shake it until the sugar is completely dissolved. It’s a good idea to double bag to prevent any unexpected leaks.

In a coffee can, add a layer of ice and rock salt at the bottom. Place the double-bagged mixture in the center, then fill the remaining space on top with more ice and rock salt.

Secure the lid tightly on the coffee can and get shaking! Movement is key for making the ice cream, and there are plenty of fun ways to do it: try passing it back and forth like “cold” potato or rolling it across a table.

As the ice melts, you may need to add more ice and rock salt. After around 10-15 minutes, your ice cream should be ready for toppings and to enjoy!

Store any leftovers in the freezer for later.

    * Notes:

*Alternatively, you can place the small zip top bag inside a large, gallon-size bag of ice and rock salt. Just keep in mind that the bags have a higher chance of getting a small pin hole and leaking while being tossed about. The ice will melt a bit faster this way as well, but it will make for a little bit lighter of backpacking or camping trip. Just wrap it in a small hand towel to help keep the cold in and warm hands away.

*You can also fill up mason jars with the cream mixture and place in a large gallon-size zip-top bag of ice and salt. Just make sure that the canning lid is on tightly and it's gently shaken so that glass doesn't break. (No football with this one)

*This is a great ice cream base for other flavors. Instead of vanilla extract, swap with mint, orange, coconut, lemon, cherry, etc...
