By summertime, most prospective college students know which school they're attending and how much they have to pay in tuition. But not Viviana Gonzalez. The Sumner High School graduate started filling out the FAFSA, or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, back in January. But a technical issue prevented her from completing the parents' portion of the form for months.

Miami Affordable Housing Project Converting to Boutique Hotel
An affordable housing apartment owner in Miami Beach has told residents to move out so they can convert the 56 apartments into a 76-room boutique hotel. The Miami Beach Historic Preservation Committee recently voted to allow the building owner to renovate the Riviera Plaza Apartments at 337 20th Street. The residents have 60 days to find another place to live. The structure, built in 1926, was originally a hotel until it was converted into apartments later.
Longtime Florida Horseman Milton S. Hendry Dies at 82
Longtime Florida horseman Milton S. Hendry, 82, died June 27 in Crystal River, Fla. The native of Bay Springs, Miss., loved horses all of his life and first became professionally involved with show horses, reining horses, and barrel racing. He later rode at unsanctioned meets in the South and Midwest before receiving his jockey license to ride Quarter Horses in Louisiana in 1972. Before retiring from riding in 1986, he was a leading Quarter Horse jockey at Commonwealth Race Course in Louisville, Ky., and Pompano Park in Pompano Beach, Fla.
Homestead Teen Charged as Adult in Fatal Shooting of Ex-Girlfriend's Mother
A 16-year-old boy from Homestead has been charged as an adult in a tragic case that left a mother dead and a family grappling with loss; the teenager, Eli Zachary Shinhoster, now faces adult charges after allegedly killing Eulalia Gonzalez, who was the mother of his ex-girlfriend. Gonzalez was fatally shot outside her home on June 27, and according to an arrest report, Shinhoster had taken a rideshare to the residence where he carried out the shooting while she held her baby daughter. Local 10 News reported that Shinhoster, initially held in juvenile detention since his arrest on July 1, was transferred to the Metro West Detention Center.
