CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Along the fence encircling Coral Springs Community Garden are flowers, bushes and vines that help produce life to vegetables, plants, and other greenery grown in the garden.
They are part of the butterfly garden -- a kind of garden within a garden that attracts butterflies and moths needed to pollinate plants.
“If we don’t have pollinators, there goes a lot of our food,” said Satya Rudin, a master gardener.
She’s one of the main caretakers of the community garden – just off Sportsplex Drive near Coral Glades High School, where thousands of pounds of vegetables and fruits are grown every year by local gardeners.
And part of Rudin’s responsibility is to nurture the butterfly garden, which has been a part of the community garden for more than a decade.
That includes taking care of the garden’s host plants: firebush, blue plumbago, milkweed and passion flower vine.
They are mostly grown along the fence stretching around the garden.
In addition to butterflies, these plants attract humming birds, bats, bees and other small animals that help pollinate everything from tomatoes, eggplants and peppers to strawberries, squashes and watermelons that are grown at the community garden and nearby food forest.

Rudin explains that the butterfly garden is also intended to preserve the natural habitat of butterflies, a species in serious decline due to climate change, pesticides, and changes to farming practices, she said.
“We want to help increase the butterfly population,” Rudin said.
On most days, butterflies flutter around the garden, dancing gently from plant to plant.
“There’s a sense of peace and nature here,” she said. “The butterflies are beautiful and being around them is joyful.”
There’s yet another component to the butterfly garden, she added: it’s an outdoor classroom.
“Kids and adults can observe the natural cycle of life here,” she said. “We are witnesses to something incredible.”
Coral Springs Community Garden is at 2915 Sportsplex Drive, next to Dr. Steven G. Paul Dog Park. It’s a joint effort of the city of Coral Springs, the Rotary Club of Coral Springs, and the volunteers.
