MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On National Mutt Day, the Mississippi Department of Transportation is recognizing a maintenance technician who rescued an injured puppy while working on State Route 72 just outside Corinth.

In May, David Walker found a dead puppy that had been hit by a vehicle in the roadway. MDOT said while he was removing the dead dog, he spotted another pup in the right of way that was severely injured.

The black lab mix puppy, later named MDOT, had two broken hind legs and was taken in by the Tishomingo County Foster Rescue .

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said that after word spread about the injured pup on social media, donations began pouring in to cover the dog’s costly surgeries.

MDOT said the dog has made a miraculous recovery. Although he may never fully use his hind legs, he can now walk on all four paws and is looking for a forever home.
