CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) – Monday was a day of legendary stories in Corning baseball history.

At the center of the discussion was former Corning Red Sox player, Gary Hess, who visited the Corning Historical Society for a special purpose. Last week, the CHS unveiled a brand new exhibit in honor of the rich history of professional baseball in the Crystal City. Hess last played for Corning in 1960 and also played for the Red Sox minor league affiliate in 1959 at shortstop.

Many of the notable items on display of the Corning Red Sox franchise were from Hess’ friend and local baseball historian, Donnie Allison. Donnie has been one of the most prominent local and regional baseball figures preserving and educating fans on the history of the Corning team. Hess was Allison’s favorite player as a kid when he watched Corning games at 7 years old at War Memorial Stadium.

Monday was a dream come true for both Hess and Allison. Hess even visited the St. Vincent Church in Corning, the site where he and his wife Carolyn were married in 1960. Monday was the first time the Hess’ returned to Corning in 64 years. Hess and Carolyn made the long drove in from the Pittsburgh area.

Hess played four seasons in the minor league system with the Boston Red Sox. His best year was in 1960 with Corning batting .302 with six home runs and 64 RBI. Hess added 27 doubles for Corning who finished the 1960 season at (60-69) and in fourth place in their division of the New York-Penn League (NYPL). Hess was even coached by one of the most legendary baseball players of all-time, Ted Williams.

Hess went on to play basketball after his time in minor league baseball. After a standout career at West Virginia Wesleyan, Hess then played pro hoops in the American Basketball League (ABL) and Eastern Professional Basketball League (EPBL) from 1962-1967. Hess would eventually have a successful coaching career after his playing days concluded in basketball.
