Corning ReStore announces reopening date on state Route 414. Here's when it will return.

After a yearlong closure due to a devastating fire , the Steuben County Habitat for Humanity ReStore will reopen Friday, Aug. 9 at 3412 State Route 414 in Corning.

Jonathan Wylie, ReStore Manager, said the store will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Due to construction continuing at the new ReStore donation center at the Route 414 site, the store will not be able to accept drop-off donations at this time, Wylie said. The ReStore will begin scheduling donation pickups on July 30.

Wylie said the Steuben County Habitat for Humanity appreciates the support and patience the community has displayed during this difficult time.

The store has been closed since a building at the site was left in ruins by a late July 2023 fire. Replacement of much of the ceiling, cleanup and electrical work has been completed since the fire.

Joy Overacker, a Habitat for Humanity spokesperson, said the ReStore site will reopen in a smaller footprint at the state Route 414 location.

    What started the fire?

The cause of the blaze was not determined, officials said. The fire broke out in the storage area of the store, destroying many items and causing smoke damage throughout the site.

The Corning Joint Fire District and the Corning City Fire Department responded to the fire.

ReStore held a sale last September to clear items salvaged from the fire.

What are the ReStore funds used for?

Sales of donated items help Habitat for Humanity partner with local families to build, rehabilitate and repair safe and affordable homes in local communities and around the world.

This spring, Steuben County Habitat for Humanity, aided by local businesses and donors, debuted a new duplex located at 3453 and 3455 Hornby Road in the Town of Corning .

Habitat ReStores are independently owned reuse stores operated by local Habitat for Humanity organizations. ReStores accept donations and sell a constantly changing inventory of diverse, high-quality merchandise to the public at a fraction of the retail price, while diverting reusable household items and building materials from landfills.

Donations to support the restoration work are being accepted at habitatcorning.org/restore .
