'So what, next pitch': Resilient Alice hopes comeback win keeps momentum going

ALICE — The season so far for Alice baseball has been up and down, and first-year coach Gonzie Trevino will tell you that up front.

Tuesday night, though, the Coyotes might have turned a corner in the rough-and-tumble District 31-4A race that could serve them well as the season progresses.

Alice left the Coyote Baseball Complex with a 5-4 walk-off win Tuesday against defending district champion Robstown, but mainly the Coyotes now know what they can do in a district where every game will likely be like Tuesday's.

"It means a lot for me, it's the first game of the district, we go in with momentum, it's a great start, it's a good feeling," said catcher Landon Rodriguez, who hit the game-tying single in the bottom of the seventh and was 2 for 3 on the day. "We can use it as a lot of momentum. It wasn't our best game, we had a couple of errors, it's fate that's in our hands. We came with it."

Trevino said the squad has used the mantra of "so what, next pitch" and throughout the season have been struggling to adhere to that. The Coyotes (10-9-2, 1-0 in 31-4A) stayed with that on Tuesday, and it showed in being able to battle back from deficits throughout the game, including the crucial seventh inning.

The Cotton Pickers scored two runs in the top of the inning to take a one-run lead. But Matt Carrillo drew a two-out walk, followed by an Ale Asevedo single and a Rodriguez RBI single tied the game. One batter later, Robert Ramirez hit what looked like a routine ground ball to Robstown shortstop Roque Serrano, but the throw went high and Asevedo scored for the victory.

The two-out rally illustrated what Trevino has been talking about throughout the season, in having faith, and told the players to enjoy the win because they are tough to come by in 31-4A. And they hope to have a few more as the season progresses.

"We talk a lot about faith, and we talk a lot about what that means, but yet a lot of times these kids they don't sell out to faith unless something happens," Trevino said. "And we've been sitting that way, we are 9-9-2, now we are 10-9-2 and it occurred. So I think it's going to propel us to know that we have something we can go ahead and dig to. We are excited about, it's only going to help us."
