The Robstown High School baseball program has a new head coach.

The Robstown ISD Board of Trustees approved the hiring Banquete baseball coach Rusty Miller as the school's new baseball coach and an assistant athletic director during a meeting on Monday. Miller has coached in Banquete for more than a decade, winning more than 200 games and leading the Bulldogs to the state tournament in 2016.

Miller will take over the storied program from the recently retired Elias Vasquez. Vasquez announced his retirement last month after spending nearly 30 years in the district he attended as a student. He spent the last 15 years as head baseball coach of the Cotton Pickers.

The Robstown program is among the area's most successful and storied, winning state championships in 1991 and 1992, and also making state appearances in 1987, 1988, 1990 and 2011.

"Obviously we were in Banquete for 11 years, accomplished a lot of great things, whether it's 130 academic all-district kids or eight academic All-Americans," Miller said. "It's basically being in the third round or later every year and 21 kids going on to play college baseball, those things are all great. We enjoyed that time in Banquete and will have a special place in my heart."

Miller led the Bulldogs to the playoffs this season after a fourth place finish in District 30-3A, falling to District 29-3A champion Goliad in the first round. Miller said he will likely start in his new position during the summer, and did not have a specific start date.

"Robstown has a great history and we want to honor that tradition as much as possible but also embrace the new time that we are in," Miller said. "And start going in a direction that can honor the tradition but at the same time take us into a new time where our kids are accomplishing great things now."
