An investigation is underway at Corpus Christi's City Hall after a woman was found dead at the bottom of an air conditioning cooling tower early Friday morning.

The woman has not been named.

Around 7:20 a.m., Corpus Christi Police Department officers were dispatched to the site in reference to a trauma call for service, the department said in a news release. When officers arrived, they located a deceased woman inside the cooling tower and contacted the Corpus Christi Fire Department to assist in retrieving her from the structure.

In a release, the city announced that City Hall employees are asked to work remotely until further notice. The utility billing offices will remain open to the public Friday.

Residents are "strongly encouraged" to avoid the area and use the 311 Call Center or the online platform for utility bill payments and other services.

The city secretary’s office will be available until 5 p.m. Friday by appointment only to accept applications for a place on the ballot for mayor and City Council member races. Residents are advised to contact the office in advance via email at CitySecretary@cctexas.com or phone at 361-826-3121.

In a phone call, City Manager Peter Zanoni said a woman was on the grounds of City Hall between 6 and 7 a.m. and “acting erratic.” He said the woman tried to open the secured entrance doors and "messed with" equipment for the location’s roofing project.

Zanoni said a city employee saw the woman walk to the other side of City Hall where a loading dock is located. He said the woman sneaked into a secure area and made her way to the top of an AC cooling system about 15 feet off the ground.

Zanoni said security camera footage showed the woman fell into the air condition system through a screening device and was killed by the fan blades that spin at a “very high” velocity.

Zanoni is hoping for City Hall to be fully open again by Monday, Aug. 19.

The investigation is ongoing to determine what led up to the woman entering the location.
