Is Corpus Christi's Red Lobster location closing? Here's what we know.

When Red Lobster announced its filing for bankruptcy in May, Corpus Christi residents let out a sigh of relief when the South Padre Island Drive location did not shutter its doors.

But on Thursday, more than two weeks later, the seafood chain announced it will close several dozen more restaurants and identified which ones are in danger of shutting down if the court approves its plan.

The Corpus Christi location is on that list.

Red Lobster said that it had more than $1 billion in debt and less than $30 million in cash on hand, according to CNN. The business plans to sell itself to its lenders, and in turn, it will receive financing to stay afloat. Part of its plan is to close some locations in the meantime.

A few weeks prior to its bankruptcy, Red Lobster abruptly closed around 50 locations across the United States. The new list of locations were revealed in court filings last week, and all could be shuttered if they can’t renegotiate their leases.

The company serves 64 million customers a year, and brings in $2 billion in annual sales, the company said in its bankruptcy filing.

The next closest location for people to enjoy its cheddar bay biscuits is in McAllen — more than 100 miles away.

As of Thursday, June 6, the Corpus Christi location is still open.
