Huge Flash Floods Hit Ruidoso, NM, Following Deadly Wildfires
The aftermath of wildfires is often just as destructive as the fires themselves. Over the weekend, severe flash flooding and debris flows struck the area near Ruidoso, New Mexico, following two weeks of intense wildfires. Two inches of rain fell on the fire-scorched soil in Ruidoso, leading to destructive flood conditions. The dark floodwaters filled with ash and soot from the South Fork and Salt Fires pummeled through Ruidoso’s canyons, drowning Highway 70 which runs through the middle of town and even toppling over a fuel tanker.

The Salt Fire is burning about seven (7) miles west of Mescalero, New Mexico, which started on June 17, 2024, from an undetermined cause. The fire is under the leadership of a CIMT with Incident Commander Mark Bernal at the helm with one (1) camp crew, four (4) Type 1 crews, two (2) Type 2 crews, one (1) Type 2IA crews, one (1) dozer, two (2) Type 6 engines, one (1) Type 1 copters, an overhead team, one (1) water tender as support and 197 total personnel.
