CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa (KCAU) — The town of Correctionville is in full recovery mode, with people from all over working to get the town back to normal.

“Everybody wants to get back into their house, and we’re going to do the best we can to get as many people back into their house as possible as quick as possible,” Mayor Ken Bauer said. “We’ve looked at everybody’s houses and we told them the situation of their house.”

The Lawton-Bronson Football and Track & Field teams took time from their summer break to lend a hand.

“So these guys that live right here, they’re my friends, kind of my family, so just kind of helping them out,” Correctionville resident Anteres Ashley said.

The Little Sioux River hit and then exceeded record water levels earlier this week at 30.9 feet, damaging many homes.

“We had four feet of water in the basement and our garage had three feet and another shed had four feet, so we had three different structures that we’re dealing with,” resident Keith Byers said. “But we’re making the best of it. So many people coming out and helping all around the country. We had Lawton, Moville and Kingsley, it’s just a lot of people coming in and helping. Free meals every day.”

As of Friday, the Little Sioux River is still at major flood levels, but has gone down eight feet since Monday. Residents hope that they’ll be back to normal soon.

“The recovery will happen,” Ashley said. “It’s just a matter of time.”

“In about a month from now, should be pretty normal,” Byers said. “But just a few more days to clean up here. It’s been going on for a week now from when the water started coming up, but we’re not done yet.”

The Multi-Agency Resource Center in Correctionville has resources available for residents including cleaning supplies, free meals and much more.
