COSBY — Sunset Gap Community Center is celebrating 100 years of serving the community. A Christian center built to serve the entire family, Sunset Gap serves about 700 families every month. It offers a food pantry, thrift shop, mission teams and playground with walking track.

The center offers seasonal events as well, such as an Easter egg hunt, Secret Santa program, backpack and school supply giveaways, a Fourth of July celebration and live auctions.

Using the theme “Honoring our Legacy, Forging Our Future,” the anniversary celebration will include a variety of activities. Festivities kicked off on Monday, July 1, with a ribbon cutting for the food pantry. On Tuesday, there was a meet and greet with Mark and Digger, who are Cocke County residents and stars of the Discovery Channel’s TV series “Moonshiners.”

On Wednesday, July 3, food distribution takes place from 9 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. The TSB RV and grill will be on site serving hot dogs, chips and water from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sunset Gap’s food pantry opened in October 1993 to help combat growing hunger problems in the area. Both perishable and non-perishable food items are available with items provided by Second Harvest Food Bank, Midwest Food Bank, Trader Joe’s and Fish Pantry. Items are also received from businesses, churches and individuals.

The center serves 110 families in Del Rio monthly while 450 families are served at the pantry at Sunset Gap each month.

During the spring and summer months, mission teams from all over the U.S. come to Sunset Gap to help the ministry. They perform vital maintenance tasks of the mission and complete home repairs and home additions for those in need. The center has three dormitories, which can accommodate as many as 85 campers.

The thrift shop relies entirely on gifts and donations from churches and individuals. The shop is open every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the first Friday and Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. New and used items are always welcome, especially baby items and clothing. In the main shop, all items are 25 cents each.
