Richard Humphries said painting isn't a want for him, it's a need

COSHOCTON − Richard R. Humphries Jr. is Coshocton Art Guild's artist of the month for July.

Seven years ago, Humphries had an irresistible pull toward creating art. He said, "my hands just wanted, no needed, to grab a canvas and brush."

He enjoys painting large depictions of local places and people. With acrylics, he creates colorful pieces in a unique impressionistic style. Inspired by the work of artist Vincent VanGogh, Humphries' pieces are somewhat abstract in design, but of subjects obvious to the observer. When painting, balance and symmetry is key to the design of his paintings, as well as focus on fairness, color and subject position. His outgoing and fun spirit is reflected in the art he creates.

For 15 years, Humphries traveled across the country driving a semi for Western Auto, giving him the opportunity to observe the beautiful geography of the eastern United States. This experience serves as inspiration for his paintings.

He moved to the area nearly a year ago from Delaware. "I have fallen in love with Coshocton," Humphries said. "I really enjoy the senior center and the Coshocton Art Guild and all the friends I have made. I am so inspired by the beauty of the land here."

He encourages all artists in the area to join the art guild, "everyone is so kind, encouraging and we all have a great time together at open mic nights."

Richard Humphries' artwork is available at The Tollhouse Art and Gifts, 408 N. Whitewoman St. It's open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Open mic nights, which also feature artwork on display, is from 5 to 8 p.m. Mondays at the Coshocton County Commissioners Community Meeting Room, 637 Chestnut St.
