County, city to declare emergency today
The Des Moines River appears poised to surge to record levels. As a result, local government entities will officially declare a state of emergency today. The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners will meet at 11:15 a.m. to discuss the state of emergency. Board Chair Norm Holmen issued a short-term declaration on Friday, which started the emergency declaration process. The county’s approval of a state of emergency today means the county will be in a state of emergency for 30 days and starts the process to receive state and federal disaster funding.
River back on the rise
After initially cresting on Sunday afternoon, the Des Moines River is once again on the rise Monday morning. The river crested at 24.66 feet Sunday and receded during the day Sunday. However, according to the National Weather Service river gauge located by the Windom Country Club, the river began rising again late Sunday night.
2024 flood officially hits record level
In the past few days, Citizen staff members have been told by longtime residents that the flood of 2024 remindful of the record flood in 1969. Well, this morning the Des Moines River level officially rose past the highest flood stage of 1969, which was 24.70 feet. In other words, the 2024 flood is now officially Windom’s largest flood on record.
Commissioners call special meeting for Monday
The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners have called a special meeting for Monday, beginning at 11:15 a.m. at the county courthouse in Windom. The purpose of the meeting is to declare a state of emergency for flooding in the county.
