Thomas Rhett Opens Up About New Music and Album Release

Thomas Rhetts new album, 'About A Woman,' is officially released! The album has been in the works for some time now and fans have highly anticipated the day. On August 23rd, his new music dropped, including song, 'Gone Country,' that released earlier this year.

"I am overwhelmed and excited for this one,' Akins told MJ. "I have a lot going on, kids are starting school. But its a fun place, this is my 7th album, not my first rodeo. I still get excited but nervous and that is a sure sign that it still matters."

'About A Woman,' marks his 7th record to date, and follows some very successful ones. In 2017 and 2019, he received Grammy nominations for Country Album of the Year. The past 6 albums have brought 21 singles to the Billboard Hot Country, with a majority of them hitting No. 1 at one point including hits, 'Die A Happy Man,' 'Country Again,' and 'Marry Me.'

When asked about his inspiration behind his newest work, Thomas said, 'When we started this project we were asking each other ya know, what is the mission of this? What is the inspiration and what sounds do we want? Really the inspiration is my wife [Lauren Akins], always has been, and the album is full of new ways to say I love you and make you dance at the same time."

Thomas is known for his upbeat, love songs, which this new album is particularly full of, the ultimate goal. He told MJ, 'We wanted the album to invoke joy, make people bop their head.'

He gives much credit to Lauren and his kids in all that he does. His four girls, ages 3-9, all enjoy their dads music, especially this album. 'They have a pulse on what is cool and what is not these days. I had been playing the demos for them and wanted them to like it. This is their favorite album because there is no slow songs. They love the Jonas brothers and all that pop music, and they love to dance. We skip the slow songs anyways.'

The four girls, Willa, Ada, Lennon, and Lillie got to tour this summer with their dad, watching him do what he loves everyday alongside Lauren too. "My favorite part is having kids is they get to watch their dad love what he does for a living and they get to watch in real time. There still are pros and cons to touring, when I am gone, I am gone, but when I am home I get to be there 24 hours a day."

Lauren has been an inspiration to all of Thomas music from the beginning as their relationship began in highschool. He explained that this album he did not let her hear all 100 some songs he had written for the album, because he would have never been able to pick which ones to go forward with. On release day, Lauren posted on her Instagram calling the new album, 'Pure Joy.'

The 34 year old has had years of experience in the music industry, and is a veteran at the creative process, however he explains that every album is different and keeping unique authenticity is always a fun challenge. He says that the melodic and production standpoint of 'About A Woman,' is different and mature compared to some of his previous works.

"I really can only write what I have experienced and what I know. I know love, I know love really well. We have been married almost 12 years now. I have written millions of songs about her. Out Instagram followers know so much about Lauren and my family so they know the backstory of the songs. This record and every record is just how I can push the boundary to be authentic."

When it comes to the album title, Thomas says this is one of the hardest parts. The title 'About A Woman,' came about when he was asked the question, 'Well, what is the album about?" His answer was exactly that, 'It is about a woman,' as is the majority of the songs on the album.

Outside of the album release, the 'Life Changes,' singer has had a lot on his plate. His song, 'Feelin Country,' was featured on the new 'Twisters' film, which happened to be a golden trophy for Lauren as the original Twister is her favorite movie! His summer tour has mostly involved the big festival shows and has been a fun scene for the family.

Songwriting is also a big part of life right now for Thomas Rhett. He recently collaborated with Morgan Wallen for the hit song, 'Memaws House,' and has been writing with many big names across the country genre.

When asked about songwriting, he said, "It was the first thing I ever did and songwriting is what I will die doing. I don't know if I will be playing shows at 80 years old but I will never stop writing songs. It is cool to have songs with other artists too, and when they choose your song out of all of them to become a single it really is the ultimate affirmation. If they are good enough for their record, that is big win, and feels really good."
