The black bear, whom officials believe was responsible for mauling and injuring a 3-year-old girl in Yellowstone National Park on Sunday night, was captured and euthanized by park authorities on Monday afternoon, according to the Associated Press. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Game warden Randy Hutzenbiler told the Associated Press that “there were attractants in the area,” such as trash and food, which led the bear to the campsite at around 10 p.m. on Sunday. The girl was then mauled by the bear in her tent and rushed to a Billings, Montana, hospital, where her condition has not been revealed to the press. Officials then laid traps around the campsite, capturing a bear which they claimed was responsible for the attack on Monday. The bear was then euthanized by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials. The clock is ticking for the Kelly Parcel, a 640-acre plot adjacent to the Grand Teton National Park’s southern boundary. Wyoming state land commissioners are pressured to sell land, which resulted in the Kelly Parcel being put up for public auction last year. The pressure comes from a constitutional agreement that many Western states made that requires the states to raise money from public lands. Revenue is typically generated by leasing the land for grazing, recreation, or selling of the land. The Kelly Parcel only raises around $2,800 annually; the minuscule income has prompted the Wyoming land commissioners to find an alternative to bring in revenue from the land.
