Edison man charged with murdering 37-year-old township woman. Here's what we know

EDISON - A 37-year-old Edison man has been charged with the Sunday stabbing death of a 37-year-old township woman.

Joan Franklin Polanco has been charged with murder, a first degree crime, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, a third degree crime, after being detained in New York City, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan announced.

Around 4:37 p.m. Sunday, July 21, Edison police received a 911 call about a stabbing on Horizon Drive and when they arrived at the scene located Lizbeth Benitez-Rivera, 37, of Edison with multiple stab wounds. Benitez-Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the prosecutor's office.

An investigation by Edison Detective Clint Hetzell and Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Detective Javier Morillo indicated Benitez-Rivera's son was asleep in his room and when he woke up later in the afternoon, found his mother deceased with multiple stab wounds.

The investigation also indicated Joan Franklin Polanco was seen entering the bedroom with a knife and leaving the residence shortly after the incident occurred. The prosecutor's office said the two knew each other.

Hours later that same day Polanco was located and detained by police in New York City.
