Route 28 is scheduled to have daytime lane closures in both directions over the next several months as a roadway improvement project begins in Somerset, Middlesex and Union counties.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning Aug. 26 and continuing Monday through Friday for the next several months, Route 28 is scheduled to have single lane closures in both directions from Washington Street in Bound Brook to Hamilton Avenue in Plainfield, the New Jersey Department of Transportation announced.

Where Route 28 is two lanes in each direction, at least one lane will be maintained, in each direction. Where Route 28 is one lane in each direction, traffic will be maintained using traffic shifts. The closures are necessary to upgrade ADA-compliant curb ramps, repair curbs and sidewalks, and improve traffic signals, according to the DOT.

All driveways will be maintained during construction. On-street parking will not be permitted during work hours, when needed. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays, when driving through the work zone, the DOT said.

This work is part of a $5.9 million federally funded maintenance project that will upgrade curb ramps to meet ADA compliance at various locations on Route 1, Route 28, Route 31, Route 206, and Interstate 78 in Warren, Somerset, Middlesex and Union counties. In addition to upgrading curb ramps, the project will repair curbs and sidewalks and make traffic signal improvements at various intersections within the project limits. This project is expected to be completed by fall 2025.
