South River fire leaves 15 residents displaced

SOUTH RIVER – A four-alarm fire over the weekend has left 15 people displaced and a Main Street home uninhabitable, according to Mayor Peter Guindi.

The fire was reported at about 10:03 p.m. Saturday at a four-family home at 160-162 Main St., between Jackson Street and Wilcox Avenue. The residents were evacuated safely, Guindi said.

A police officer, who helped evacuate residents, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but is doing well, the mayor said.

About 70 firefighters from South River and the surrounding area were among those who responded. The fire was extinguished by about 12:30 a.m., the mayor said.

Red Cross also responded to the scene to help residents, Guindi said.

"I thank the firefighters and police for risking their lives to do what they do to save lives and try to save property, too," said Guindi, an active borough firefighter. "It's not easy, but it's what we signed up to do."

The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said.
