SOMERVILLE – The Somerville High School football team put it all together Friday night and Summit felt the brunt in a battle of unbeaten squads.

The Pioneers roared to a 41-0 rout behind senior back Terrell Mitchell, senior quarterback Brenden Pacheco and many others, scoring all of their points in the first half. Both teams’ reserves played the entire second half with a running clock.

“This was our most outstanding game, our most complete game as a team,” said Mitchell, a Wake Forret commit, who also picked off two passes. “We did a really great job. We can definitely be better, too.”

By halftime, Pacheco had passed for 185 yards and four touchdowns, and he and Mitchell each ran for one in the cross-divisional Big Central Conference game.

From the start, Somerville was in charge. Pacheco opened with a 13-yard run and not long after ran 36 yards to set up the Pioneer’s first touchdown - a run by Mitchell.

“Coach (Matt Bloom) harped on it all week; they were gonna bite down on the run because we’ve been heavy on that all year,” said Pacheco said. “We got what we wanted and we had shots down the field.”

Pachecho connected twice with Brady Scheier on TD passes of 44 and 57 yards. He threw touchdown passes of 18 and 65 yards to senior Max Nuzzi.

That initiated a as conducted entirely by both teams’ reserves. Somerville improved to 6-0 with its second straight shutout while Summit fell to 4-1.

Somerville has outscored its last three opponents, 95-16. They were coming off a 22-0 win at Hillside last Saturday.

They were even better this week, said their coach

“Without a doubt. In all three phases,” said Bloom. “Obviously offensively with the score, and then shutting them down the entire game, and against a team that has shown they can really put up points.

“Everything seemed to really really click, we were able to run the ball, able to throw it when we needed to and get some strikes when we needed to – you can’t expect to it to be 41-0 at halftime, it was a dominating effort by us,” said Bloom.

The Pioneers recorded their second straight shutout as they beat Hillside 22-0 last Saturday.

Pacheco was 7 of 13, for 185 yards passing, and four first-half touchdowns against Summit. Mitchell ran for 122 yards and a score in the first half.

“Coach put us in the right positions,” said Mitchell. “We came out hot and never stopped.”

Somerville returns to BCC Liberty Silver Division play Thursday night by playing host to North Hunterdon.
