How the Camden City community is turning up the heat on school official Muhammad

Members of the Camden City community continued their crusade against school district advisory board President Wasim Muhammad on Tuesday night, creating chaos at a board meeting.

Many of those who attended the meeting were visibly angry in a video recorded by FOX29 Philadelphia. They were seen and heard booing, yelling and even blowing whistles to disrupt Muhammad's address.

In June, Muhammad and the district agreed to a settlement of nearly $2 million after a woman accused him of sexually abusing her during her time as a Camden City student in the 1990s.

Muhammad was a middle-school teacher during this period. He was also using a different name.

Prior to the settlement, a jury awarded the woman — identified in court documents as Jane Doe and later as Salema Hicks Robinson — a total of $1.6 million.

“By way of this settlement, the district does not take liability for any of the allegations made by the plaintiff from 30 years ago,” the district said in a statement at the time of the settlement.

Muhammad has continued to ignore requests for his resignation, remaining steadfast in his claim of innocence.

In the two-week trial, members of the jury found that Muhammad "did not sexually assault Doe when she was under 18 years of age and that he did not engage in ‘nonconsensual contact’ with her."

They did, however, believe that the district was liable for negligent supervision and for creating or permitting a hostile school environment.

Multiple community members took to the floor to address the board and again demand Muhammad's resignation, including Robinson's attorney.

"This is her in eighth grade," attorney Jeffrey Fritz, who represented the former student, said in videos of the board meeting. He held up a large board plastered with the smiling, teenage face of Robinson and the words "Remember it."

Footage posted to X, formerly Twitter, by the Philadelphia Inquirer's Melanie Burney shows people behind Fritz cheering and wearing shirts that say "Fed up, fired up!"

As reported by multiple news outlets, the audience erupted in shouting, boos and whistles when Chabree Muhammad, one of Muhammad's wives, attempting to speak to his defense.

Multiple eyewitness reports of the meeting show chaos, including photos of a woman being restrained by a young man. WHYY.org identified the man as one of Muhammad's sons.

In addition to community members calling for the board president's resignation, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has also previously voiced his opinion on the matter, calling for Muhammad's resignation, as reported by multiple news outlets.

As of Wednesday morning, a video of the school meeting had yet to be posted to the district's YouTube channel.

A call to the district superintendent's office had yet to be returned.
