MAPLE SHADE — A local man who rushed a child to a hospital with signs of a cocaine overdose has been charged with drug and weapons offenses, authorities said.

Daniel Garcia Jr., 27, is accused of possessing a variety of illegal drugs, three loaded guns and more than $150,000 in cash, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey. Garcia came to the attention of police on June 23 when he and another person arrived at a hospital with a child who was not breathing, having seizures and drooling.

Doctors defibrillated the minor "at least twice" to restart the child’s heart, a criminal complaint said. The child was then flown to a children's hospital where "life-saving treatment continued."

The child was later discharged from the hospital, according to the Sept. 20 complaint in Camden federal court.

The complaint does not identify a relationship, if any, between Garcia and the child.

It said the medical problem began after Garcia had finished feeding the youngster, who raised their arms, rocked back and forth, and then became unresponsive.

The youth tested positive for cocaine, and a doctor concluded the child's symptoms indicated a cocaine overdose.

A search of Garcia's home a day later found approximately $4,200, an envelope with ammunition and drug-packaging material. Investigators on June 25 found $150,000, three loaded guns, and illegal drugs in a vehicle that Garcia had been seen operating, the prosecutor's statement alleged.

A laundry bag in the car's trunk allegedly held more than 11 ounces of methamphetamine, more than 1½ pounds of cocaine, and almost 3 pounds of marijuana, according to the statement.

The bag also allegedly held oxycodone, amphetamine and alprazolam tablets, as well as hallucinogenic mushrooms, three scales and drug-packaging material.

Garcia was charged Sept. 20 with possession with intent to distribute more than 50 grams of methamphetamine and possession of guns by a convicted felon.

The charges are only allegations. Garcia has not been convicted in the case.
