They are coming from all over the world. They want our clean, clear water. They want our relatively cheap power and land. They want access to the massive fiber optic cables that run from all over the world, across the Pacific, and through the Tualatin Valley on their way East to I-5 and beyond. They want the tax subsidies that Oregon lavishes upon them. They bring construction jobs but, once completed, offer very few jobs per acre. Their value to the digital world is unquestioned. But their value to the people of Hillsboro, Oregon, needs to be.

Hong Phat Supercenter will open to the public on July 26th after a 30-minute ceremony that begins at 9 a.m. The store owners invite shoppers and community members to tour the new grocery store and indoor mall shops starting at 9:30 a.m. This Eastport Plaza situated location is the company’s fourth store, which opened a Tigard location last year. The store’s owner, with a partner, purchased this 154,000-square-foot building at 4200 SE 82nd Avenue from Walmart at the end of 2023. It now stands as one of the largest stores of its kind in the region, offering food familiar to Montavilla residents who have shopped at the brand’s 101 SE 82nd Avenue location since 2013.

City spending of taxpayer dollars on Chinese water tiger art at two Portland festivals climbed to $60,000 over eight months, according to records newly obtained by WW. As the newspaper reported last week, Mayor Ted Wheeler’s chief of staff, Bobby Lee, first shepherded $30,000 in taxpayer dollars to a water tiger mural (and other related pieces) created by a former girlfriend’s teenage niece last summer. The water tiger is a symbol of power and courage in Chinese culture.
