Battle Mountain Complex Zones I & II updates for 7/27
MONUMENT/UKIAH – UPDATE – 7/27 – (From ODF Teams 1 & 3) Firefighters working northwest of Monument along the Battle Mountain Complex Zone I continued to make progress on containment lines spanning from Top Road and Wall Creek Road. Additionally, aircraft resources, including a Type 1 and Type 2 helicopter, were able to assist firefighters on the ground with bucket drops in areas of high fire activity. Aircraft have been grounded for several days due to heavy smoke in the area; using these resources once again has helped ground crews immensely.
Malheur Lumber Company to halt operations after 41 years
JOHN DAY – Malheur Lumber Company, the last remaining commercial sawmill in John Day, has announced it will close down its operations. In their closing letter, the company cited the “lack of a willful/drug free workforce, lack of housing to allow to recruit from outside the area, market conditions of lumber over the last couple of years, cost of manufacturing (due to inflation) and low/inconsistent production (due to lack of employees) and continuing layering of governmental regulations upon small business in Oregon” as being primary factors for the closure.
This Washington Fire Year Really Isn’t Easy!
Current Situation: The Easy Fire is burning through dense timber, dead trees, and ground vegetation on very steep terrain. Activity near State Route 20 has moderated, but there is still fire within the north and south sides of the perimeter. Firefighters, in collaboration with the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT), have been clearing debris and fallen trees from the highway. The closure status of the highway is being frequently reassessed, so check the WSDOT travel map for updates.

Portland launches the Office of Arts & Culture
Your browser does not support the audio element. Last year, city officials decided to end Portland’s contract with the independent Regional Arts and Culture Council. The organization was previously responsible for doling out grants and providing art advocacy for the city. Now, Portland’s Office of Arts & Culture has taken shape and has found organizations, including RACC and MusicOregon, to help administer grants to artists and creators. The city itself will be working on arts advocacy and education. We hear more about how Portland plans to partner with creators from Chariti Montez, the director of the new office.
