Five teens who allegedly led Covington police, Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputies, and Louisiana State Police on a high-speed chase along Interstates 12 and 55 over the weekend are now juvenile detention on car theft and other charges.

According to a Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, the chase started early Friday morning after a Covington police officer tried to pull over a suspicious car spotted in a residential area. The spokesperson says the driver of that car sped away, starting the chase. The chase took the officer and, later, sheriff’s deputies and state troopers onto I-12 and I-55 before finally coming to an end near Wardline Road just outside of Hammond.

Sheriff’s deputies say after the driver stopped, the five teens inside the car all got out and ran. Deputies say those teens were all wearing masks and gloves when they took off running. A 16-year-old girl was arrested at the scene. The four other suspects, all boys, were arrested throughout the morning in various locations in the parish.

According to investigators, the car involved in the chase was reported stolen from Tangipahoa Parish on Thursday.

Two 16-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy are facing two counts each of vehicle theft and one count each of aggravated flight and resisting an officer.
A 15-year-old boy is facing one count each of vehicle theft, possession of stolen property, aggravated flight, and resisting. The 16-year-old girl is facing one count each of possession of stolen property, aggravated flight, and resisting.

    The case remains under investigation.
