Winfield police officer arrested on suspected DUI
A Winfield police officer who was arrested June 29 for suspected DUI has since bonded out of jail, according to the Cowley County sheriff. The officer, identified as Greg Venable, was arrested in the 1500 block of North College Street on suspicion of DUI, transporting an open container and possession of a firearm while intoxicated, according to Cowley County Sheriff David Falletti, whose agency investigated the incident.
Police DUI crash into house put Kansas man in jail
COWLEY COUNTY— A Kansas man was arrested after a crash into a home just before 10p.m. Wednesday in Cowley County. According to Arkansas City Police, a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Anthony Perez-Hernandez had gone through the stop sign at the intersection of North 2nd Streed and Kansas Avenue in Arkansas City and collided with the home in the 200 Block of W. Kansas Avenue.

An estimated 500 people attended the annual Cowley County Pride event on Saturday at Island Park in Winfield and downtown locations. Emilee Wilke, one of the event coordinators, said in a press release that organizers were thrilled to see that level of community support and called it “inspiring.”

Driving to and from Newkirk as often as I do, I pass by Main St. Skate in Winfield several times a week. Long regarded as one of the long-term institutions of Cowley County, it’s a place that has seen its share of history over the past several decades. By history, I am referring to things more local, such as matters of the human heart. How many people have met their future husband or wife there? How many people had their first kiss there? Or even just held that special person’s hand there for the first time while they skated? I am sure that’s happened for so many people during that period of time.
