In 2021, Staunton EM 2, LLC. purchased the old Staunton Mall and asked tenants in the area to vacate. The company asked for a rezoning of the area so it could demolish the plot and build it anew with a mix of business and residential spaces. The demolition went through, but the construction did not. Rather, the rubble has sat still for over a year, waiting to be cleared by a contractor.
