Cranford Movie Review: 'Despicable Me 4' The New Superheroes

CRANFORD, NJ - The newest addition to the “Despicable Me” franchise: “Despicable Me 4”, is a heartwarming film that highlights the importance of love and family. Fans have waited seven long years for the sequel, and it does deliver laughs and adventure.

Gru has started a new chapter of his life with the AVL (Anti Villain League). He has now decided to fight against evil rather than be a super-villain. Fans finally get to see Gru, played by Steve Carell, settling into his suburban life with his wife and kids, but it isn’t long before things get wild again.

Gru and his army of minions face an old high school nemesis, Maxime Le Mal, played by Will Ferrell. Maxime has never forgiven Gru for stealing his song during a high school talent show and develops a deep-rooted hatred for Gru and his family. Gru and the AVL outsmart Maxime, and he is sent to prison. He manages to escape and swears his revenge on Gru. Maxime, who is a human-cockroach hybrid, is able to use his insect-inspired powers, which makes him a very worthy opponent throughout the film.

Cranford Theater echoed with kids’ laughter at the slapstick comedy that has become familiar for this franchise. At times the movie did feel a bit chaotic with multiple storylines happening at once, but there is fun to be had and laughs to be shared.
