CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Police have released body-worn camera footage of the moment a man was arrested after a shooting outside of a Cranston bar over the weekend.

Michael Mancini, 28, was taken into custody Saturday night at 39 West Restaurant and Lounge on Phenix Avenue, which had a party tent set up in the parking for St. Mary’s Feast.

Cranston Police Chief Michael Winquist said officers working a security detail rushed into the party tent after hearing a gunshot.

The officers can be seen in the bodycam footage pushing their way through the crowd toward two men who were fighting.

Winquist said the officers eventually ran into Mancini, who was involved in the fight, and noticed he was holding a handgun.

The officers took Mancini to the ground and attempted to handcuff him, but the police chief said he violently resisted arrest and refused to let go of the weapon.

“Where is it?” one officer can be heard shouting in the footage, referring to the gun.

“I think it’s under him!” another officer replied.

The officers eventually subdued Mancini and secured his handgun, which Winquist said was loaded with a 15-round magazine.

In the footage, the officers can be heard telling one another to “watch out for the blood” upon realizing Mancini had been shot in the leg.

“He shot me with my gun bro!” Mancini exclaimed.

Investigators later determined Mancini accidentally shot himself while pulling the gun from his waistband during the fight inside the party tent, the police chief said.

Winquist said Mancini was brought to Rhode Island Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

An investigation into the incident revealed the fight stemmed from an argument between Mancini and another man at the bar. The verbal disagreement turned physical when the man realized Mancini was armed, according to Winquist.

Mancini is facing a number of charges, including firing in a compact area, carrying a weapon while under the influence of liquor or drugs, carrying a pistol without a license, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.

The officers who searched Mancini after his arrest discovered he had cocaine on him, so he was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Mancini will likely be arraigned once he’s released from the hospital, according to Winquist, though it’s unclear exactly when that will happen.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone who witnessed the ordeal is asked to call Detective Jon Nelson at (401) 477-5150. Tips can also be submitted anonymously by texting “CRANSTONPD” to 847411.
