Apple Pencil Pro review: feature-filled stylus is waiting for the world to catch up
Without a doubt, the Apple Pencil is one of my most used creative tech tools. It is in my hands more than any other stylus and these days even more than my analogue pens and pencils. This new Apple Pencil Pro looks the same as the last one but has now been packed with a few new hardware and software features that build on a very strong foundation. That being said, the Apple Pencil Pro only works with the new M4 iPad Pro and M2 iPad Air, and even with cool new features including barrel roll, squeeze, hover and even Find My Device, I can’t see anyone upgrading their iPad just to get access to those features. You could call it a point upgrade!
4 surprising ways AI has been used for years
Whether you call it artificial intelligence or Apple Intelligence, AI is everywhere right now. Arguably the tech buzzword of (at least) the last two years, generative AI has hogged headlines with increasing inevitability since the arrival of large language models like ChatGPT and, of course, text-to-image generators. But while those...
Stable Diffusion 3 Medium is another leap forward for AI image generation
Stability AI has announced the open release of Stable Diffusion 3 Medium. It's the first open release of the SD3 series and its most advanced image generation open model to date. The company says the open-source model outperforms the best AI image generators (including its own) for photorealism capabilities. Meanwhile,...
HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S PaperMatte offers the most paperlike reading, writing and drawing experience yet
Digital tablets can be great productivity devices, but can they also be canvases for artists and creatives? The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5”S PaperMatte certainly can thanks to first-of-its-kind new display tech that provides a realistic pen-on-paper feel designed to compete with dedicated professional drawing tablets. On the one hand, the...

This Californian city’s logo drama is getting even messier
Last month, the City of Visalia unveiled its new logo design – much to the dismay of its residents. The Californian city had previously held on to its traditional logo for over 20 years, so when the change was announced it was natural that some folks had strong opinions (many of them negative).
Apple iPad Pro (M4, 2024) review: is there such a thing as too powerful?
Another amazing piece of creative hardware from Apple. If you aren’t a professional creative or power user then this is overkill in most cases. Aesthetically this is the best option you can get at 5.1mm thick, glare free glass, Apple Pencil Pro ready and seriously powerful in both GPU and CPU terms. It’s only a good upgrade option if you are on the Pre M chip iPad with lower than 6GB of RAM but then you will feel that upgrade in your packet. If you don’t need to use a pencil then consider a MacBook Air and if you do need a pencil see if the M2 iPad Air will work for you first.
Don't blame Apple for all those ugly new iPhone homescreens
For all the fruitful AI announcements during yesterday's WWDC conference, some of the loudest cheers were reserved for the most basic features. Most notable perhaps was the new Calculator app for the iPad, but another "it's about time" addition is the ability to customise the iPhone homescreen by placing icons anywhere. Oh, and you can also change the colour of them.
"Our strategy was to place impact at the heart of the Brand Impact Awards": Spencer Buck on rebranding the BIAs
The BIAs have come a long way in ten years, establishing themselves as one of the preeminent global award schemes in that time. But to remain relevant and attractive to the design community, the scheme needed an elevated identity system that lived up to the calibre of work recognised and awarded by BIA's world-class judges, and a trophy that had the potential to become a coveted, iconic object.
Wacom's found a use for blockchain - and it will protect your art from AI
Wacom has found a way to wrangle one controversial tech, blockchain, to dampen the impact of another, generative AI. Wacom Yuify is a service, in beta for Adobe, that enables digital artists and photographers to permanently record ownership of their work on the blockchain, to then control the legal use of those images through licensing.
How to spot AI images: don't be fooled by the fakes
You may be wondering how to spot AI images in 2024 considering that AI image generators have improved so fast. Is it still possible to tell a real photo from an AI-generated invention? Or the work of a human from AI art made by a machine model? Well, it's becoming more difficult, but there are still ways to spot AI art if you look closely, even with some of the examples that almost fooled us.
Apple Intelligence could be bad news for AI gadgets
So, the rumours were true. Apple has elected to call its own, on-device AI Apple Intelligence. Which is either genius or ridiculous, depending which way you look at it. Last night's announcements at WWDC were fruitful, even for Apple, with the company revealing the latest generations of each of its operating systems. But all anybody's talking about is Apple Intelligence.
