The Creedmoor Board of Commissioners faced a daunting task at its regular Tuesday night meeting with the vote on the proposed tax rate on the agenda.

The board voted 3-2 to adopt a tax rate of 42 cents per $100 valuation, along with the rate and fee schedule, after three citizens spoke during the public hearing.

The city will also use over $660,000 from the fund balance to balance the budget.

Samantha Harris said that she wanted a balance between growth and taxes and that the board should ask the people what they want.

Pamela Criswell asked the board to vote against the tax increase at this time. She questioned some of the line item spending and spoke of lack of development within the city.

Thelma Thomas Mungo asked for more transparency and communication when it comes to the monies being spent. She stated that the board should listen to the community and use forums and surveys to gather information on the needs of the citizens. She also spoke about the lack of amenities within the city.

Commissioners Robert Way, Ed Gleason and Archer Wilkins voted to approve the proposed tax rate, while Commissioner Emma Albright and Mayor Pro Tem Georgana Kicinski voted against the tax rate.

Mayor Bobby Wheeler said the board had to make a tough decision. People want new businesses in the community and that requires additional rooftops, he said. People come in and say they want to keep the small town feel, he said. “It’s like a double edge sword,” Wheeler said.

In other business, Police Chief Troy Wheless recognized Officer Stacey Desantis for her act of bravery, selflessness and decisive action that saved a life on May 11 of this year. She exemplifies the highest ideals of heroism and compassion, and she is an inspiration to all according to a certificate presented by Wheeler.

Wheless also recognized Detective Tiffany Smith Moore. She was recognized with a certificate from the North Carolina Department of Justice Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

Moore has received the Intermediate Law Enforcement certificate, which includes formal training, professional training, and work experience as a law enforcement or criminal justice officer.

    In other action the board:

    • Approved a trial run for a farmers market on Sanderford Street. Guidelines and rules will need to be developed before the market can open.

    • Approved zoning text amendments to the Code of Ordinances.

    • Tabled a discussion of an easement agreement for the new Joe Peed Lift Station.

The board will meet again at 6 p.m. on June 17 at city hall.
