Falls Lake Academy’s high school gym was abuzz with excitement on the evening of May 9 as the FLA Music Department hosted a very special event during the school’s Art Expo — highlighted by the world premiere of “Firebirds,” a captivating piece of music commissioned specifically for the school’s middle school and high school music programs.
An unforgettable premiere
The evening began at 6:30 p.m., with the gymnasium filled with students, parents, teachers, and community members.
The unique composition, “Firebirds,” created by renowned band composer Randall D. Standridge, was dedicated to the memory of Hailey Brooks, Nathan George, and Mr. Chris “THE BOSS” Williams, three individuals whose lives and spirits had profoundly impacted the Falls Lake Academy community.
A tribute to fallen Firebirds
In the past few years, the Falls Lake Academy community in Creedmoor has experienced significant loss and love. Hailey Brooks (Elementary School), Nathan George (High School), and Mr. Chris “The Boss” Williams (custodian) were cherished members of the community. To honor their memories, the band director reached out to Randall D. Standridge, who agreed to create a piece in their memory. The resulting composition, “Firebirds,” embodies the resilience and spirit of the Firebird, rising from the ashes and persevering.
A celebration of life and music
The FLA Bands, led by Jaron Cox, and the Guitar II Ensemble, led Tina Rippe, presented “Firebirds” with precision and passion.
As the first audience to ever hear this composition, attendees were treated to an exclusive musical experience. The piece’s upbeat melodies and joyful notes perfectly captured the essence of celebration, reflecting the wonderful spirits of Hailey, Nathan, and Chris. The entire evening was filled with well-known pop, rock, and Motown hits, creating a lively and celebratory atmosphere.
A community united in generosity
Admission to the concert was free, but the FLA Music Department encouraged attendees to bring donations or canned goods for the local ACIM Food Pantry. The community responded generously, bringing in a significant amount of food items to support those in need.
The Tri-M Music Honor Society raised around 72 pounds of donated canned goods during the event, bringing their total to over 200 pounds for the school year alone. This act of kindness added another layer of meaning to the event, highlighting the school’s commitment to making a positive impact beyond the walls of the academy.
Honoring memories through music
Jaron Cox, director of bands for both the middle school and high school, expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in making the event a success.
“This premiere is more than just a performance; it’s a tribute to the extraordinary lives of Hailey, Nathan, and Chris,” he said. “Through ‘Firebirds,’ we celebrate their memories and the joy they brought into our lives.”
Celebrating artistic excellence
The Art Expo was the culmination of Project-Based Learning presentations for various classes, including presentations throughout the day from April Black’s students in Visual Arts II-III, Photography I-II, and the National Arts Honor Society.
Looking forward
The Art Expo not only showcased the musical and artistic talents of Falls Lake Academy’s students but also strengthened the bonds within the community. The premiere of “Firebirds” served as a reminder of the power of music and art to bring people together, celebrate life, and create lasting memories.
Falls Lake Academy looks forward to hosting more events that inspire and unite the community, continuing to honor the legacies of those who have touched their lives
The Falls Lake Academy Art Expo on May 9th was a night to remember, marked by exceptional music, heartfelt tributes, and community spirit,” event organizers stated on a press release. “The debut of ‘Firebirds’ will undoubtedly be remembered as a highlight in the school’s history, a testament to the enduring impact of Hailey Brooks, Nathan George, and Mr. Chris “THE BOSS” Williams.”
