WAYNE – Five Wayne State College students were awarded medals during national championships at SkillsUSA’s National Leadership and Skills Conference. The SkillsUSA National Championships at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC) was held June 24-28 in Atlanta. Wayne State had many students attend, and five of those students medaled in the competition. Hailey Hoffman, Columbus, and John Mann, Norfolk, won the gold medal in the Robotics – Urban Search and Rescue category, and Zach Covington, Papillion; Jonathon Dixon, Craig; and Sarahi Lopez, South Sioux City, took home the bronze medal in the Chapter Display competition.
Madison man sentenced to 57 months for fentanyl conspiracy and cocaine possession
Jason Viera Penalbert, 37, of Madison, got a federal sentencing on Wednesday, July 17, for his involvement in a conspiracy to distribute a significant quantity of fentanyl. In Omaha's federal court, Penalbert was sentenced to 57 months in prison, to be followed by a 2-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal justice system.

Nebraska City subdivision dirtwork extended
(Nebraska City) -- Recent wet weather has pushed back preliminary work on Nebraska City's new subdivision. Earlier this week, the Nebraska City City Council approved a change order extending the Kreifels Hills Subdivision's substantial completion date from August 1st to September 1st, and the final completion from September 1st to the 30th. Nebraska City Mayor Bryan Bequette tells KMA News rainy weather pushed back infrastructure work in the subdivision planned for property in the northern portion of the community near CHI St. Mary's Hospital.
Nebraska offers 2026 wide receiver
The Nebraska Cornhuskers have offered a scholarship to a top player in the class of 2026. Xavier McDonald is a four-star wide receiver from Morton High School in Morton, MS. Last season, as a sophomore, he appeared in 11 varsity football games. McDonald made 56 receptions for 1,166 yards and 16 touchdowns. The wideout has been a popular name on the recruiting trail. Nebraska is the 15th scholarship offer, with McDonald already holding offers from Auburn, LSU, and Ole Miss. The SEC appears to be a front-runner for his commitment. According to On3’s Recruitment Prediction Machine, Auburn is the early leader. The Huskers do not hold any commitments to the class of 2026 but have extended numerous offers in the past week.
