The Redwood Parks Conservancy (RPC) Smith River Alliance, multi-partners and 110 volunteers cleaned up in the aftermath of the July 4 Fireworks event along South Beach, Crescent Beach and Pebble Beach. July 5.

According to Recology Del Norte, an estimated 2500 lbs. of spent fireworks debris was removed by several teams of ten volunteer groups spread across various locations, bringing Del Norte beaches back to pristine status. Recology Del Norte provided debris collection at zero cost to the community. Volunteers from Rural Human Services, California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, Recology Del Norte, California State Parks, Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority and Cal Trans all had a hand in removing every tiny bit of litter and returning our beaches to its breathtaking natural beauty.

The tonnage did not include recyclables and the gross weight was less than the-near four tons of spent fireworks collected July 5, 2023. The reduction is noteworthy since Redwood Parks and Smith River Alliance have conducted education within the community and brought the litter problem to the public’s attention. More visitors are self-policing.

Autumn Subers, Volunteer Coordinator of Redwood Conservancy heaped praise on the public for doing its part in reducing the pollution impact on Del Norte beaches and ocean. RPC Executive Director Sal Munoz credited dedicated volunteers in “…making a tangible difference in protecting the coastal ecosystem and preserving the natural beauty of Crescent City.”
