Firefighters battle grass fire west of Sidney
CHEYENNE COUNTY (July 25, 2024) -- Firefighters from several agencies battled a fire west of Sidney near Cheyenne County Roads 105 and 24 Wednesday. At about 1:23 p.m., Sidney Fire Department received a page of a fire west of Sidney with flames showing. An estimated 275 acres were burned in the fire. The scene was cleared at 7:23 p.m. Wednesday.

PIERCE - Several Northeast Nebraska wrestlers took to the mat yesterday for the first ever girls’ version of the Nebraska Maine Exchange out at Pierce High School. The girls from Nebraska dominated throughout the evening, picking up six pins as a team on their way to a 56-16 victory.

Missing Lincoln man found safe
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Lincoln Police have located a man who went missing Wednesday night. According to police, Calvin Dean Hansen, 63, was located safely Thursday morning. Police thanked everyone who called in tips to help locate Hansen.
Hartington falls to Malcolm in Class C junior legion championship
HARTINGTON - Hartington Post 4 looked to capture the Class C junior state legion title yesterday, needing to beat Malcolm Post 354 twice to do so. A pitchers’ duel all night long, Post 354 scored two runs in the eighth-inning while Hartington mustered only two hits in the contest as they fell in the title game 3-1.
Nebraska to host 2026 quarterback on Friday
The Nebraska Cornhuskers will welcome a class of 2026 quarterback to Lincoln this weekend. Four-star prospect Jackson Taylor will be on the Lincoln campus on Friday, July 26. Taylor is a 6-foot-0, 170-pound quarterback for Thousand Oaks in Los Angeles, CA. In 13 games last season, he threw for 2,598 yards with a 56% completion percentage. He threw for 29 touchdowns and seven interceptions and finished the year with a quarterback rating of 111.3. Taylor holds multiple offers, but early indications are that the Auburn Tigers are the early frontrunners for his commitment. Nebraska’s class of 2026 has no commitments. The class of 2025 has 17 commitments and is ranked outside the top 25. Multi-dry weather hazards through Friday; Hot and sunny weekend
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -The dry and hot weather pattern will be bringing some hazards with it through Friday, with conditions somewhat improving into the weekend. A strong ridge of high pressure is hovering over the area at this time. This system will continue to bring in smoke from the Canada and Northwest United States wildfires through Friday. This will bring in some hazy conditions across the region Thursday night into Friday. An air quality alert is in effect for this very reason now until Friday 9 a.m. CDT Friday. People should exercise caution when going outside during these times, especially people that have asthma and other lung issues. Lows overnight Thursday will drop into the 60s with mainly clear conditions otherwise. Highs for Friday will climb into the mid to upper 90s with some areas reaching 100. With the constant dry northwest flow, breezy winds with speeds around 10 to 15 mph, that will be picking up during the day Friday and abnormally dry conditions will bring in the potential for some fire concerns, especially into North and Western Greater Nebraska. A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 9 p.m. MDT for this very reason. People in and outside of the headline are urged to not burn outdoors, discard anything flammable properly and in the event of a fire, call 9-1-1. Mainly sunny conditions are expected during the day Friday.
Griesel hosts youth basketball camp in Lincoln
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Sam Griesel is about to travel to Germany for his second season of professional basketball. Before he leaves, Griesel is spending time with young hoopers across the capital city. Griesel hosted a youth camp at Speedway Sports Complex on Wednesday. More than 50 players registered, ranging from sixth through eighth grade. Griesel, a Lincoln East graduate, says its the first camp he’s hosted in his hometown.
