Crivitz rides third-inning outburst to M&O Conference title

    2024-05-17

COLEMAN — One inning can flip an entire game of baseball on its head, which Coleman found out the hard way against Crivitz in the finals of the Marinette and Oconto Conference championship tournament.

Nursing a one-run cushion entering the top of the third inning, Crivitz pounced on the Cougars thanks to a three-run double by Colten Tarmann which put the Wolverines on top by four.

Stephen Allard did the rest, limiting Coleman to just three hits over the final four innings, to help Crivitz secure a 5-1 triumph over the Cougars on Thursday.

Allard spun a complete seven-inning outing on the mound and was sharp, allowing six base knocks while issuing a pair of walks to go with a trio of strikeouts.

Crivitz (9-3 M&O, 14-7 overall) was in control of Thursday’s action from the opening frame after Tarmann choked up to a hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Tegan Werner before JJ Brand scored on an error to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead.

Gavin Pusick led off Coleman’s half of the first inning with a single, moved up to third base on a pair of errors and finally scored on courtesy of an RBI-groundout by Wyatt Bieber.

Coleman (10-2 M&O, 14-5 overall) had opportunities to chip into the Wolverines’ lead but were thwarted each time.

Miles Lews socked a single before advancing to third on an error and a stolen base, while Karson Risner worked a walk to give the Cougars runners at the corners with one out in the bottom of the fourth.

As he did all afternoon, Allard buckled down and got the Wolverines out of trouble after striking out Cole Berth before getting Logan Lamine to ground out to first base to end the inning.

Coleman managed to get another runner into scoring position in the bottom of the sixth after Brady Dufeck earned a free pass, but Allard got Lewis and Risner to fly out.

Coleman’s last gasp came with one out in the bottom of the seventh after Lamine slapped a single, but the Cougars once again suffered back-to-back flyouts as the game ended in favor of the Wolverines.

Logan Kurth was the losing pitcher on Thursday after giving up two hits, four walks and five runs, four of which were earned, through three innings of work, although he did rack up a game-high four strikeouts in the process.

Coleman out-hit Crivitz by a 6-4 margin but the Cougars committed two errors compared to just one miscue for the Wolverines. Each squad stranded six runners on base.

Risner went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, while Kurth, Lamine, Bieber and Lewis all went 1-3 at the dish.

Werner collected two base hits in three trips to the plate to go with two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Brand walked twice and scored two runs, while Tarmann went 1-3 with four RBIs.
