The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs awards $43.6 million for homeless veterans in Texas

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced today it will allocate $43.6 million in grants to assist homeless and at-risk veterans in Texas. This funding is part of a broader $806.4 million national initiative through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) and Grant and Per Diem (GPD) programs.

The SSVF program will distribute $797.5 million across the country to help quickly rehouse veterans, prevent homelessness, and secure stable housing. The GPD program will provide $8.9 million to fund transitional housing and case management for vulnerable veterans, including women and seniors.

According to the VA, Veteran homelessness has decreased by 52% since 2010, with more than 46,500 veterans placed in permanent housing in 2023.

“We’re making real progress in reducing Veteran homelessness, but there is much more work to do,” said VA Secretary Denis McDonough. “These grants allow VA, alongside community partners, to provide more housing and wraparound services to more homeless and at-risk Veterans than ever before.”

These grants align with the VA’s “Housing First” model, focusing on securing housing first, followed by comprehensive support services. The announcement comes after recent policy changes to the HUD-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program, which aim to increase veterans' eligibility for housing assistance.
