Victoria Independent School District warns of extreme heat risks and urges safety measures

VICTORIA, Texas - Victoria Independent School District has issued a statement about the Excessive Heat Warning issued by the National Weather Service. The heat index values expected to range from 110 to 114 degrees. In some cases, these temperatures may even exceed 115 degrees. Such extreme conditions present a serious risk for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those engaging in outdoor activities.

The district is strongly encouraging everyone to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids and to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to help keep cool and reduce the risk of heat-related health issues.

Students involved in University Interscholastic League (UIL) activities will adhere to the 2024-25 UIL Recommended Heat Protocol, which uses the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) to track environmental conditions during outdoor physical activities. The WBGT measures factors such as temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation. Although physical education classes typically spend less than an hour outdoors, students will still follow protocols similar to those outlined by UIL.

In addition, all campuses are equipped with the Perry Weather app, enabling schools to monitor the WBGT index in real time. Alerts will be sent to campuses if conditions become unsafe for extended outdoor activities.
