    Texas state trooper fights brain cancer

    EDINBURG, Texas - A Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper from Edinburg, Trooper Oscar Loya, is seeking the support of the community as he battles germinoma brain cancer. The 29-year-old trooper is undergoing treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and is expected to remain there for the next six to eight weeks.

    Loya, a father of three young children ages 8, 7, and 4, will be living temporarily in Houston during his treatment. He hopes to return to Edinburg on weekends to visit his children and family members.

    Donations are being accepted to assist with medical and incidental expenses, including gas and gift cards to help with travel. Those wishing to contribute can make checks payable to the DPS Troopers Foundation, specifying "Trooper Oscar Loya Donation." Contributions can be mailed to 5821 Airport Blvd., Austin, TX 78752.     A benefit plate and bake sale will be held Aug. 25 at George West City Park Pavilion, 801 Frio St., George West, Texas, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The plates will include barbeque chicken and sides.
